"Wall of Prints" Fan Art

For the past several years, I have noticed the proliferation of Fan Art booths and tables at conventions. My buddy Dean and I call them the "Wall of Prints" booths. Fan Art is artwork based off of popular characters from pop culture. I have seen dome absolutely outstanding work from seasoned professionals all the way down to amateur beginners. Just for the record, I have nothing against fan art. I put my kids through private school and college with fan art.

The concern I have with these "Wall of Prints" guys is some of their business practices. I seen and talked to some of them and they are very professional. Others however, seem to have no concern for the artwork, or even the artists themselves. They just seem to be selling 11x17 sheets of paper, 4 for $20.



What really is annoying to me is the fans that buy these images are there for the comic con experience. They have a limited amount of money to spend and they decide to buy 4 prints of their favorite characters for $20. Good Deal! Now they have these four sheets of paper, no backing boards, no bags, not even a rubber band. They have to now navigate a crowded dealer room and convention, without damaging their prints. I imagine they will get back home with their damaged prints. I wonder how many of them will buy artwork again at a con. I find it very annoying, but that may just be a personal pet peeve.

I may not agree with some of these guy's business practices, but it doesn't mean I'm against them. Far from it! I think everyone has a right to do business as they please, as long as they stay within the limits of the law. I'd just like you to consider these suggestions when contemplating buying not only Fan Art, but any art at a convention.

1. Is the person selling the work the artist who created the work?   

2. Are they pleasant and friendly?

3. Is their booth well planned, or does it look like it was thrown together for a flea market?

4. Can you transport the artwork without the risk of damage?

5. Are you compelled by the artwork itself, or the character it portrays?

6. Is the artwork worth the purchase price to you personally?

The purchasing of artwork is a very personal and subjective experience. Every one has wonderfully different tastes. This is what makes a free market where everyone competes. When you see a booth with artwork at a con, consider these suggestions as you are looking. They may even help you take home some artwork, which is always a good thing!


2016 Yearbook Kickstarter

The Art of Mitch Foust 2016 Yearbook Kickstarter Campaign will launch Friday, June 10. I will run through July 10. Every year since 2009, I have complied the previous tear's work in book form. This is the eight volume in the series. These books have traditionally had very limited print runs and have sold out quickly.

In addition to the 2016 Yearbook, I'm offering Into the Jungle. This is a Kickstarter Exclusive and only available through this campaign. Into the Jungle is a book full of drawings of Jungle Girls. These two books are not the only rewards available. There are Limited Edition Framed Canvas prints that come complete with a Certificate of Authenticity. There are several commissions available and Original art. There are also coloring pages. I've had a lot of requests for coloring books of my work. I just don't like the format. I decided to release my coloring pages on individual 11x17 sheets, ready for framing when complete. The sheets are 80lb bristol, so they are heavy enough to take all media.

This is my third kickstarter. I have been amazed and humbled form the response to the first two. I appreciate all you and seems like I can't say Thank You enough! Take a look at the campaign. If you see something you like, please consider backing this campaign.

A New Site...Finally!

For several years now, I have been using my Deviantart site as my primary webpresence. I really love the deviantart community and I will continue to update the site, but I've been needing a bit more. I need a place where people can order prints with a secure process and not rely on just sending me an email and taking care of it through Paypal.

So I've decided to learn how to set up and maintain a website. I know my way around Photoshop and Illustrator, but otherwise I'm pretty much a novice. Please forgive me as I learn the process. I've been able to add canvas giclees to the store. I've been using these for about six months and I'm really excited about the quality. They really look great.

Another page I have added I call Fan Stuff. (real creative, I know) Over the years, fans have sent me images of their use of prints, tattoos, and hand colored images. I have to admit that I have been remiss in collecting these images in a coherent fashion, but I've posted a the ones I could easily find. I didn't record who they came from. If you see an image you sent, let me know and I will post credit to the image. If you have an image you have colored or any other image you think would fit the page, please send it to me and I'll get it posted.

If there is anything you think I have missed, need to add or change, please let me know. I'm all up for some feedback.

Finally, I want to thank all of the fans who have made my artwork possible. Without your support, I couldn't keep the artwork going. I really enjoy meeting people at the shows, your comments help validate all of the work in the studio.
